Powerlink vs RCA

Powerlink vs RCA – Which is better for Beolab?

  • Description
Are you unsure whether to choose Powerlink or RCA (tulip) for your Beolab speakers?
You are not alone.
Both connections work, but there are important differences in usage, convenience, and performance.
On this page, we clearly explain which option is best for your situation.

What is Powerlink?

Powerlink is the original Bang & Olufsen connector for active speakers.
Audio + on/off signal (trigger) in a single cable
Automatic speaker activation
Best integration with B&O systems

What is RCA?
RCA is a standard analog audio connection found on almost every device.
Works with TVs, streamers, and amplifiers
Easy to connect
No special B&O equipment needed

Powerlink vs RCA – key differences
Powerlink:
Automatic on/off
Best stability
Original solution
Proper B&O design
Can be connected to receivers with a trigger signal using adapter cables

RCA:
Simple and universal
Cheaper
Almost everywhere for sale
Not every speaker has an RCA connection option.

When do you choose PowerLink?
If you are using an original B&O system
If you want automatic operation
If you own the PowerLink cables

When do you choose RCA?
If you are using a TV or WiiM streamer
If you want a simple solution

Please note
Not all Beolab speakers work directly with RCA.
Some models require a trigger signal (2/7)
Without this, they will not turn on

Which cable do you need?

For optimal performance of your B&O system, the right cable choice is crucial.
We always recommend the Powerlink connection, as it was developed by B&O to virtually eliminate interference.

The technical development of the Powerlink involved three major phases:

MK I: The original 5-wire base cable.
MK II: The improved version, necessary for data transfer to the info displays of the Penta, 3000, 4500, and 5000 series.
MK III: Developed for the Ice Power generation, with a modified solder pattern.
We supply the MK II variant.
This cable is the 'gold standard' for compatibility; it meets Bang & Olufsen's technical specifications and is suitable for any Beolab loudspeaker with a DIN8/Powerlink interface.
