Are you unsure whether to choose Powerlink or RCA (tulip) for your Beolab speakers?
You are not alone.
Both connections work, but there are important differences in usage, convenience, and performance.
On this page, we clearly explain which option is best for your situation.
What is Powerlink?
Powerlink is the original Bang & Olufsen connection for active speakers.
The cable consists of a round 8-pin connector plug, always male-to-male, and ready for direct connection to TB and Beolab speakers from 1980 to 2012; after that, they switched to an R45 connection.
The DIN8 contains 8 pins connected to an MKII connector, including Audio right and left, on/off function, data (communication) surge protection function, and grounding, all connected to a single connector.
This cable therefore ensures the automatic activation of speakers, essentially the best integration for B&O systems. What is RCA or phono, also known as tulip connector?
RCA is a standard analog audio connection found on almost every device.
It is actually the standard for almost all audio connections from most audio brands. The cable works with TVs, streamers, and amplifiers.
Easy to connect, often plug & play, and due to the color (often red and white), you cannot go wrong with which port it connects to, right or left.
No special B&O equipment needed.
Powerlink vs RCA – key differences.
Powerlink: Requires B&O or an adapter cable with a trigger.
Automatic on/off
Best stability and the best connection option.
Original solution, proprietary B&O design.
RCA:
Simple, universal, and an inexpensive connection.
Available almost everywhere
Not every B&O speaker has an RCA connection option.
When do you choose Powerlink?
Basically always; you adhere to the manufacturer's design.
If you are using an original B&O system.
If you want automatic operation. If you already own the PowerLink.
When do you choose RCA?
If you use a TV or WiiM streamer.
moving away from a B&O connection.
If you want a quick solution.
Disadvantage:
Not all Beolab speakers have an RCA connection.
Some Beolab models only work with a trigger signal (Lab2/7/10/11).
Which cable do you need?
For optimal performance of your B&O system, the right cable choice is crucial.
We always recommend the PowerLink connection, because it was developed by B&O to virtually eliminate interference.
The PowerLink cable can be used with amplifiers/streamers with a trigger connection via adapter cables such as the Stereo trigger cable (AV-TRSDIN8); this also applies to the newer RJ45 connections (from RJ45 to DIN).
Because PowerLink is a more expensive solution and you might already have the RCA cable lying around, that is also a good choice. The disadvantage of this is that the speakers often switch off later than the system (usually after 3 min) and, if no music or speech is detected, the speaker will turn off; you may hear the relays clicking. Hum could also be a potential problem; the RCA cable is grounded by default.
Newer speakers, including the Beolab 3, 9, 4002, 6002, and 8002, can be connected using a line cable.
This cable features RCA and DIN7 connectors.
With this, B&O has removed the RCA connection on the Beolab, which frees up space.
These speakers have a DIN8 connection but can still be connected directly to a receiver with a pre-out via RCA using a special line cable.
The technical development of the Powerlink involved three major phases:
MK I: The original 5-wire base cable.
MK II: The improved version, necessary for data transfer to the info displays of the Penta, 3000, 4500, and 5000 series.
MK III: Developed for the Ice Power generation, with a modified solder pattern.
We supply the MK II variant.
This cable is the 'gold standard' for compatibility; it meets Bang & Olufsen's technical specifications and is suitable for any Beolab loudspeaker with a DIN8/Powerlink interface.
